Sindh’s self-employment program offers small loans to entrepreneurs

The government of Sindh has decided to launch the self-employment program under which interest-free loans will be given to people who want to start their own small businesses.

It was approved at a cabinet meeting held at CM House on Thursday. The meeting brought together all the provincial ministers, councilors and Chief Secretary Mumtaz Shah.

The COVID-19 situation has resulted in unemployment for many people. “Now is the time to introduce a pro-poor economic package whereby small interest-free loans can be offered to people to start their small businesses or strengthen their ongoing business activities,” said CM Murad Ali Shah, adding that he could save Rs2 billion during the current fiscal year to start.

Cabinet members, after extensive discussion and deliberation, approved the proposal and named it the “Chief Minister’s Independent Employment Program”. They unanimously decided to increase its budgetary allocations so that a large number of populations can benefit from it.

The chief minister said they should create a mechanism to decide the loan amount, its disbursement and its collection. He formed a committee under the leadership of P&D chairman Mohammad Waseem, with finance and law secretaries to work out the details of the program.

Billboard Policy

Local government secretary Najam Shah told cabinet that a posting policy had been developed in light of Supreme Court orders. Under the policy, billboards must be constructed and installed according to standard height, size and restrictions as follows.

  • The depth of a billboard would be 15 feet, the width 45 feet, and the obvious height 31 feet.
  • The 10-foot display panel depth would be 20 feet wide and 21 feet high.
  • An eight-foot-deep billboard would be 12 feet wide and 12 feet long.

Homi Katrak rooms

The cabinet, on the recommendation of the heritage committee, approved the request of the building owner, Homie Katrak Chamber located on Abdullah Haroon Road, Hoshang Road for the addition and modification of the heritage building.

The compound of the building would remain the same with the rebirth and inside the compound a 27-story building would be constructed.

Sister city

The cabinet learned that the Pakistani ambassador to China had informed the Sindh government that the Hubei provincial government wanted to establish a sister-province relationship between Sindh and Hubei province, and a sister relationship between Karachi and Wuhan.

The Wuhan administration has completed its internal procedure to appoint an important place on the bank of the Yangtze as the place of Pakistani-Chinese friendship.

Karachi administration would also undertake procedures to appoint an important public square / road on a similar pattern as a special gesture of friendship on a reciprocal basis.
