New website offers transport options in Kauai during rental car shortage

HONOLULU (KHON2) – A new website was started to address the current shortage of rental cars in Kauai by providing transportation options that residents and visitors can use.

Transportation options include airport shuttles, carpooling, bike rentals, a map of Kauai bus stops and routes, regional hiking guides, and more. In addition, there will be weekly blog posts on transportation-related topics, such as booking a shuttle bus and parking permit requirements for Kokee State Park.

“During the pandemic, our residents got a glimpse of life without the influx of cars on our roads and there’s no denying the improvement in traffic,” Kauai Mayor Derek SK Kawakami said in a statement. . “As we continue to recover, we see the opportunity to better manage the impact of visitors and this includes implementing a change in mode of transportation on our island. “

The website is the result of a collaboration between the Office of Economic Development and the Hawaii Tourism Authority. Partners hope the site will encourage green walks, reduce traffic, increase opportunities for small businesses, and educate visitors about local cultural values.

There is also a section called “How to Travel with Aloha,” which provides tips and recommendations from a local perspective.

“Educating visitors to travel responsibly is essential to addressing the impacts of tourism and improving the well-being of Kauai communities,” said John De Fries, president and CEO of the Hawaii Tourism Authority. “We encourage travelers to use this comprehensive website when planning their trips. “
