Orange County’s population is expected to grow 13% by 2035, according to OCTA, bringing more drivers to the county’s roads as cities work together to coordinate traffic signals across the county.

OCTA’s multi-year regional traffic signal synchronization project with Iteris supports the goals of Project P, a comprehensive transport funding program under the Measure M program that aims to significantly reduce travel time, fuel consumption and county-wide greenhouse gas emissions, while improving safety, mobility, reliability and the overall travel experience for all road users, including vehicles, buses, bicycles and pedestrians. By reducing delays and stoppages in key corridors for passenger vehicles and heavy vehicles, the project will help reduce CO2 emissions and fuel consumption, which in turn will contribute to sustainable environmental improvements. and air quality.

Since its launch, OCTA’s traffic light synchronization program has already resulted in a 13% reduction in travel time, a 14% improvement in travel speed, a 52 million gallon reduction in fuel consumption fuel and an 885 million pound reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

As part of the project agreement, Iteris will provide operational and infrastructure improvements at key intersections along a 13-mile segment of First Street/Bolsa Avenue through the four cities and one county in Southern California. .

Iteris will provide services including identification of upgrades to traffic signal equipment, Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) equipment and communication infrastructure, design and construction of traffic signal system improvements, as well as the development and implementation of optimized traffic signal timing plans, with the goal of improving traffic flow, improving public safety and reducing stops in the cities of Santa Ana, Huntington Beach, Tustin, Westminster and Orange County.

As part of the operations and maintenance phase of the program, Iteris will apply traffic data and analytics from the mobility intelligence capabilities of its ClearMobility™ platform to continuously optimize management operations. traffic. Using signal performance metrics and arterial performance metrics from its ClearGuide® solution, Iteris experts can: monitor intersection health and safety, as well as arterial travel times and reliability; identify and prioritize signal optimizations and arterial resynchronization efforts; identify congestion hotspots; and understand the impact of road traffic on surrounding thoroughfares.

“We are proud to continue supporting OCTA’s goal of improving road user safety and mobility by leading this traffic signal synchronization and infrastructure upgrade program,” said Bernard Li. , Vice President, Mobility Consulting Solutions at Iteris. “This initiative represents the continued expansion of Iteris’ mobility advisory services on the west coast and will ultimately help increase the value and efficiency of the region’s existing transportation infrastructure, while improving safety, quality air and reducing fuel consumption.

Iteris has designed, deployed, or equipped more than one-third of all signalized intersections in the United States, supporting local and state transit agencies with advanced detection sensors and traffic light design, timing, and synchronization services. traffic.
