Coal transport increases by 111 MT in 2021-22

By prioritizing coal loading, Indian Railways has increased coal transportation by a record 111 million tonnes (MT) in the year 2021-22.

The railways have been the main supplier of coal to all power stations and have taken significant steps in the year 2021-22 and the current month of April to increase the supply of coal to power stations.

During the year 2021-22, Indian Railways increased the carriage of coal by railways by a record 111 million tonnes and loaded a record 653 million tonnes of coal from 542 million tonnes the previous year, registering a growth of 20.4 percent. hundred.

According to the railways, this improvement has been possible due to various measures taken by Indian Railways – the movement of coal trains has been prioritized, and each train is intensively monitored during the entire cycle, from loading to movement and finally unloading.

In addition, during the period September 2021 to March 2022, the coal load in the power sector increased by 32% in just two quarters.

In April 2022, Indian Railways took numerous steps to prioritize coal loading in the power sector, resulting in coal supply increasing by more than 10% within a week .

Through this prioritization and monitoring, coal train transit time has been significantly reduced by 12-36% for critical power plants.

Indian Railways has also prioritized the transportation of coal to long-distance power stations, which is reflected in the fact that the average advance of coal trains has increased by 7% in the last five days, per compared to the average advances during 1 -10 April.

Despite this increase in the average advance of coal trains, the time between two successive loadings of the same train for these stocks has decreased by 10%.

Through these operational innovations, Indian Railways has increased the supply of coal trains to power stations and also loaded more coal rakes in a sustained manner.

The railways are fully equipped and have mobilized all resources to ensure a high and sustained level of coal supply to power stations is maintained and is committed to lifting all domestic coal that is brought to the tracks. avoidance/good sheds by coal companies and imported coal. brought to ports by power generation companies.
